The First Volunteer...

Our first adult volunteer arranged to come in during the evening of the first day Casa opened. Pat Squire had read about Casa in the newspaper, and decided to find out if we needed help. Did we! She was an answer to a prayer. That first exhausting day, when she came to relieve Marge and me at 7 p.m., we were overjoyed to see her! For the next year and a half she worked the 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. shift two and sometimes three nights a week.

Pat remembers how tight things were in the beginning. There were many times when we didn't even know where the next night's baby formula was coming from. But somehow we always got it. Pat later married an attorney named Fred Klein**, who has energetically served ever since on the Casa Board of Directors. Together they have given hundreds of hours and fired the enthusiasm of countless other volunteers.

**Today, Fred Klein no longer serves on the Board of Directors, but Pat Klein has returned as a volunteer as a member of the Board of Directors.
