1973

FIRST CRISIS NURSERY in the United States, established by Sister M. Kathleen Clark, R. N. in Tucson, Arizona to provide care for infants and toddlers at risk of child abuse and neglect.

1975

FIRST CASA de los NIÑOS THRIFT STORE opened to offer retail second-hand clothing, furniture, household goods, equipment, books and personal items with proceeds to benefit the nursery.

1978

NEW 18-BED SHELTER built and opened for older children ages four through eleven.

1984

THE CASA de los NIÑOS THRIFT SHOP EXPANDS to a larger facility at 2719 N. Campbell Avenue.

1987

Sr. M. Kathleen Clark retires as Executive Director Emeritus.  Jeanne Landdeck-Sisco hired as new Executive Director.
 

1988

SISTER M. KATHLEEN CLARK FOUNDATION FOR CASA de los NIÑOS established to ensure the care of future generations of children in crisis.

1989

JUDICIAL SUPERVISION PROGRAM begun through contract with Pima County Superior Court to offer visitation supervision between non-custodial parents and their child(ren).

 

SELECTION BY ANGEL CHARITY FOR CHILDREN as the beneficiary of capital fund drive to build new 40-bed crisis nursery for infants from birth through age five.

1990

EXCHANGE CLUBS OF TUCSON PARENT-AIDE PROGRAM initiated to provide in-home support services to families in crisis in order to prevent child abuse and neglect.

1991

NEW 40-BED ANGEL NURSERY dedicated September 6, 1991.

1992

THE CASA de los NIÑOS THRIFT SUPER STORE MOVES to a new, larger facility (15,400 sq. ft.) at 1302 E. Prince Road.

 

CASA B RENOVATION includes facelifts for bathrooms, offices and living areas, new furnishings, and a full-service workstation for monitoring rooms.

 

CASA de los NIÑOS VOLUNTEER PROGRAM RECEIVES POINT OF LIGHT Award from   President George H. W. Bush.

 

TUCSON WEEKLY NAMES CASA de los NIÑOS "Best Social Service Organization of Tucson."

1993

THE 20th ANNIVERSARY Gala Commemorative Concert was held November 13, with the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus, guest soloists Nancy Davis Booth and Erin Booth, and narrator Jeanne Landdeck-Sisco.

 

CHILDREN CAN THRIVE PROGRAM added to Residential Services providing parent training, developmental evaluation, and nutritional assistance for children who are underweight or diagnosed "Failure to Thrive."

1994

ARIZONA ATTORNEY GENERAL'S DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD presented to the Casa de los Niños Residential Program for outstanding service to victims of crime.

1995

KELSCH ADMINSTRATION AND HOLSCLAW FAMILY CENTER construction began for Casa de los Niños’ newest facility to house Family Service Programs and administrative offices.

 

LINDA RONSTADT BENEFIT CONCERT titled “An Evening for Children” from which Ms. Ronstadt designated a donation of $100,000 to Casa de los Niños.

 

HEALTHY FAMILIES PROGRAM added to Prevention Services providing in-home visits by Family Support Specialists to assist parents in areas relating to their children's development.

 

PARENT LEGAL EDUCATION CENTER added to services providing legal education for parents regarding rights and obligations concerning their children.

1996

MEDICALLY VULNERABLE PROGRAM added to the Residential Program serving children with such severe medical needs that they would otherwise have to be hospitalized.

1997

ACTIVE 20/30 CLUB OF TUCSON ACTIVITY CENTER AT POOH CORNER remodeled to accommodate double the children in pre-school day program.

 

FAMILY VISITATION PROGRAM is revised from the former Judicial Supervision Program, to serve voluntary clients experiencing custody disputes.

 

PARENT AIDE PROGRAM branches out to form its own agency.

1998

FAMILY BUILDERS PROGRAM added providing case management of low priority Child Protective Services cases offering referrals to appropriate community resources.

 

VICTIMS OF CRIME ACT (VOCA) GRANT awarded to Casa de los Niños to fund new programs in the Residence. Services include developmental screening and treatment for medically vulnerable infants & toddlers and self-esteem building activities for the older children.

 

TUCSON WEEKLY NAMES CASA de los NIÑOS "Best Social Service Organization of Tucson" for the second time.

 

O'RIELLY FAMILY FOUNDATION AND UNION PACIFIC FOUNDATION honors Casa de los Niños with grants to refurbish the older children's residence, which is renamed the ORFA residence.

1999

CASITA DE SALUD (Little House of Health) opens to offer outpatient health care to former clients and children in the foster care system.

 

Employment Transition Program offered as a community collaboration with 4 other agencies to move welfare recipients into productive employment.

2000

ATTORNEY GENERAL JANET RENO AND THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE'S OFFICE FOR VICTIMS OF CRIME awards Casa de los Niños one of eleven National Crime Victims Service awards for outstanding service to child victims.

 

KIDS CAFÉ offered in collaboration with the Community Food Bank begun to provide low-income children with a nutritious meal after school.  Program moved to Community Food Bank in 2002.

2001

SAFE BABY PROGRAM formed as a community collaboration by the Pima County Attorney’s Office  with local hospitals and child agencies to prevent newborn abandonment.

 

PARENT INFOLINE instituted as a centralized resource for parenting information in Pima County.

 

KIDS CAFÉ recognized by Southwest Gas with a ‘Right from the Start’ award.

 

CASA de los NIÑOS successfully completes first accreditation process through Council on Accreditation for Children and Family Services (COA).

 

ARIZONA FOR THE HOLIDAYS music collection, with Rodney Glassman, Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus, Sons of Orpheus, and other local artists, released with Casa de los Niños receiving proceeds from the sales.

2002

SAFE BABY PROGRAM receives state recognition with an Arizona Criminal Justice Commission Innovation Award.

 


Two Casa de los Niños playground areas receive remodeling, including new equipment, through the generosity of the Joseph Stanley Leeds Foundation.

 


Child Abuse Prevention Through Legal Education, Parent InfoLine, and Safe Baby Program rewarded for child abuse prevention efforts through the Arizona Republic Charities Child Abuse Prevention License Plate Funding.

2003

Sister M. Kathleen Clark, Founding Director Emeritus, dies on February 21, 2003.

 

Parents, Children & Divorce Program is begun through a contract with Pima County Superior Court to offer pre and post divorce and education classes to divorcing couples with children.

 

30th ANNIVERSARY OF CASA de los NIÑOS is celebrated on November 14th with a Birthday Fiesta and Banquet at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort.  Announcement of the Circle of 30 5-year fundraising challenge by the Foundation.

2004

Executive Director Jeanne Landdeck-Sisco announces her retirement after seventeen years.

 

Jeanne Landdeck-Sisco recognized for her service by Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano and Child Welfare League of America as a ‘Passionate Protector of America’s Children’.

 

SUSIE HUHN hired as the third Executive Director in Casa de los Niños’ history.

 

MEDICALLY VULNERABLE FOSTER CARE PROGRAM added to agency programming, extending expertise into the recruitment, licensing, case management and support for new families interested in becoming foster parents for medically vulnerable children.

 

CIRCLE OF 30 fundraising challenge for the Casa de los Niños Foundation is completed early netting over $350,000.

 

THRIFT STORE TOO opens its doors as a second retail site generating revenue for the Casa de los Niños Crisis Shelter.

2005

Casa de los Niños successfully completed Council on Accreditation for Children and Family Services (COA) reaccredidation through July 2009 in recognition as a provider of high quality children’s services.

2006

FAMILY BUILDERS becomes IN HOME SERVICES through the Pima Family Partnership community collaboration providing comprehensive support services to at-risk families reported to Child Protective Services.

JUSTICE SANDRA DAY O’CONNOR visits Casa de los Niños and reads to the shelter children from her new book on her second day of retirement.

NIGHT FOR CHILDREN launched as an annual fundraising event generating over $97,000 from donations received at private parties throughout the community.

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION PROGRAMS expand to include POWER OF AN HOUR offering parents the opportunity for receiving parent education in a non-stigmatizing environment, with other familiar parents, and supported by their employers or other communities.
