The foster parent journey: your role
Becoming a foster parent is a big commitment, and we’re here to guide you every step of the way. Foster families play a vital, healing role in a child’s life by:
- Providing a stable, loving home. Offering a safe, predictable environment where a child can begin to heal from trauma.
- Championing a child's future. Working hand-in-hand with professionals and the biological family to support permanency—whether through reunification, adoption, guardianship or another planned living arrangement.
- Nurturing connection. Helping children maintain essential ties to siblings and other important people outside the home.
- Meeting complex needs. Patiently and collaboratively addressing the child’s specific medical, behavioral, emotional, and educational needs by working closely with the entire Child and Family team.
- Committing to growth. Participating in ongoing training to continuously develop and strengthen your skills relevant to foster care.

Basic requirements for foster parents
These are the fundamental requirements needed to begin the licensing process:
- Age: You must be at least 21 years old (or 18 years old for adoption).
- Background check: All adults in the home must pass FBI and local criminal background checks and obtain a Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card.
- Residency: Must be lawfully present in the United States.
- Health & finances: You must be medically qualified by a health professional and able to meet your current living expenses.
- Home environment: Any children in the home must have a designated bedroom and their own individual bed.
- Couples: If you are married, both parties must complete all requirements.
Ongoing support for our licensed families
Once you are licensed, you become part of the Casa de los Niños family. You will be assigned a licensing worker dedicated to supporting you:
- Your personal advocate: Your worker will attend meetings with you, such as Child Family Team meetings, court, and Foster Care Review Board meetings, helping you advocate for the child or adult in your care.
- Continuous learning: They provide ongoing training and resources to help you strengthen your family relationships and better support the child’s needs.
- Community & connection: They coordinate fun family activities to help you meet and connect with other foster parents.
- Emergency help: Access to emergency on-call support whenever you need it.
Specialized and kinship care
Child and Adult Developmental Home Program
For individuals interested in caring for children and adults with developmental disabilities, Casa de los Niños offers the specialized training and support required for licensing.

Kinship care services
In partnership with the Department of Child Safety (DCS), Casa de los Niños provides kinship services to support relatives who are caring for children in their family.
